PEACE AND HELL
The banners fall on the empty heads,
which roll and disappear,
slipping into the mouth of the beast
which has its turns rejoiced.
Mitch Brezounek
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
The monument to the Red Army in Shumen was erected in 1948. The monument is located on the main square and it features a cut pyramid with stone reliefs on all sides. The central part depicts a Soviet soldier with a gun in his right hand, waiving a flag with his left hand. There is a pentagram above the figure. The author is Nikolay Vladov - Shmirgela, an artist closely connected with the Communist movement before World War Two. The artist was born in the city of Shumen. He left the Union of Bulgarian Artists before he died in 1999. The monument is not mentioned in the publications about the author, nor is it considered a hallmark for the city.
